The GPS With a ‘D’

A GPS receiver estimates its longitude, latitude, altitude and all about its position based on the information received from the satellites and accordingly calculates its position on the Earth. But have you ever been interested to know what the accuracy level is? It always happens that some inaccuracies pop up due to some assumptions in calculating the position. The calculative measures assume that the signals travel at a constant speed through the atmosphere to reach the receiver. But it doesn’t happen so and the energy of the signal dies out slowly as travel through different spheres of the atmosphere. This causes a delay which is not counted while calculating the position of the receiver.

It is just the one factor leading to inaccuracy and there some more. To overcome these inaccuracies some crafty engineers came up with the idea of differential GPS(DGPS) which calculates the position within an accuracy range of a couple of meters .The basic idea behind this DGPS is calculating the GPS inaccuracy from a receiver station on the Earth with its own position already known. The DGPS calculates inaccuracy for an area and then it transmits the corrective radio signals to all receivers in the area equipped with DGPS. This corrective radio signals provide information about correction to be implemented.

DGPS makes GPS a more accurate and reliable system for the measurement of position. Not only this, it also broadens the application areas of GPS!

Fighting Poachers with GPS

In the Mafikeng Game Reserve in Africa, GPS tracking devices with technology similar to SatTracx are being used to track Rhinos. As per park authorities the GPS tracking devices are being drilled into the horns of the Rhino (Horns are dead cells, so hopefully they do not hurt the rhino!). The catch is even if a Rhinoceros is killed by poachers, the tracking device will help locate the horns.

We definitely hope that the poachers are caught and this use of technology will ultimately discourage poaching.

In fact the game authorities are confident that they will be able to track animal movements on the periphery of the game reserve. As a result they will either coax the animal back into the reserve or raise an alarm in the village.

Maybe the Forest Departments in India can take cue from this use of technology.

Real Time Vs Passive GPS Vehicle Tracking System

The improvement in GPS technologies over the time has made various available options for the consumers. If you are really planning to buy a unit of GPS vehicle tracking device you may get confused when supplier will ask you which one you want either the real-time or passive tracking device?

It is really important to know the fundamental differences between these two types of tracking device before you go for purchase.

A real time vehicle tracking system allows you to locate the vehicle live by logging on to a website at any time you want to do so. Once you are logged in you can track the real time location, speed and route being followed by the vehicles. These devices show the exact location of the vehicle within range of 10-20 metres. It is expensive in a way that you need to have monthly subscription of some service provider companies and pay for it. The general use of real time GPS is restricted to companies and fleet managers.

On other hand passive GPS tracking system are compact portable units which you can place inside your vehicles. It only records the detailed information about the geographical locations, speed and direction of the vehicle it has been placed in. These passive GPS devices have limited memory space so they can only record the data for a limited time till its memory is full. When you want to extract the information from it you have to remove it from the vehicle and connect it your PC and transfer the data. Using some software you can collect the detailed information about where your vehicle has been on the drive. It is less expensive too!

Now I think you won’t get confused when supplier will ask you. So what are you waiting for? Go for an intelligent purchase now!

GPS Makes Snow Removal Easier and More Efficient

Snow Ploughing

In the US, GPS technology is being incorporated with snow ploughing vehicles . The salt trucks and snowplows are now being equipped with real time GPS tracking devices, which convey information about the deployed vehicles for plowing.

The GPS technology helps the concerned authority to find which roads have been cleared and salted. Which route needs deploying of more plowing vehicles and man-force. It also makes easier to convey message to the citizens as to which route they should follow.

Apart from improving efficiency of vehicles it will also check reluctantly behavior of worker on the work site. The concerned authority can also find which routes really don’t need deployment of more vehicles so that more vehicles could be deployed in areas which really need it. In this way management of resources becomes easier and more intelligent
